Day Services - Tailored to the Individual

Our day services provide structured developmental opportunities for young adults aged 18 - 40 with multiple disabilities. The students are supported in their activities by a very high staff to student ratio.

Every student who attends the day services has an Individual Programme Plan detailing the individual's aims in the areas of academic, social, living and recreational skills.

Social Skills

Students build skills which enable them to interact and form relationships with other people. Communication is an essential aspect of the work at the day services. Some students work to develop basic communication skills and students who communicate non-verbally explore alternative communication methods like signs and symbols, communication boards and books, touch talkers, computer switches, eye-pointing, facial expression and body language.

Students experience different social situations and emphasis is put on community involvement. Trips and visits include shopping, parks, gardens, sports and recreation facilities etc. Getting out and about also ensures that our students can be seen making decisions, taking control of their lives and are seen as valued individuals, thus working to promote general acceptance and understanding.

Academic Skills

Students have the opportunity to develop their learning skills in order to better understand and function in the world around them. Students could be working to improve concentration span, to develop concept awareness or to improve numeracy, literacy and computer skills. Learning is seen in its broadest sense, making the most of all opportunities available.

Living Skills

This is to enable an individual to become as independent as possible. For some this may mean focusing on eating and drinking, holding a cup or learning to swallow. Other students could be planning a meal, working within a budget or using household appliances. Developing wheelchair expertise such as steering a power chair or building stamina can be an important goal. Students are encouraged to develop the necessary skills and confidence to make effective decisions and choices.

Recreational Skills

Students try a wide range of recreational activities. These could be at the day centre or at other locations with few limits to the range of opportunities. Some activities undertaken include art, musical appreciation, crafts, drama, trampolining, ice skating and bowling. The idea is to try a wide variety of pastimes so that students can learn to make constructive and informed decisions about how to fill their leisure time.

Parity also makes use of the services of qualified physiotherapists, speech therapists and music therapists.
